BREAKING NEWS: Guidance on Sitting has been updated by Chief Medical Officer

Last week, the UK Chief Medical Officers published updated Physical Activity Guidelines, reinforcing an important message for the millions of people who spend much of their day behind a desk.

While the recommended activity targets remain unchanged, the evidence supporting the health risks of prolonged sitting has become even stronger. The updated guidance clearly states:

"Adults should aim to minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary and, when physically possible, should break up long periods of inactivity with at least light physical activity."

For office workers and employers, this is an important reminder that how we work matters as much as how often we exercise.

For many years, physical activity has been associated with going to the gym, running or playing sport. The latest guidance reinforces that our health is also shaped by what we do during the other 15 or 16 waking hours of the day. Standing to take a call, walking to speak with a colleague, using the stairs, or simply changing posture regularly all contribute to better health.

This is particularly encouraging because it reflects the direction Active Working has championed for well over a decade.

In 2015, I had the privilege of chairing the expert group that developed the UK's first guidance on reducing sedentary behaviour in the workplace, commissioned by Public Health England and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. At the time, encouraging people to stand more and sit less at work was considered a relatively new concept. Today, the scientific evidence is stronger than ever.

The refreshed guidance also reinforces that the greatest health gains come from moving from inactivity to any level of activity. Every movement counts, and small changes made consistently throughout the working day can have a meaningful impact on both physical and mental wellbeing.

The evidence continues to grow, but the practical advice remains refreshingly simple.

Move more. Sit less. Break up long periods of sitting whenever you can.
